Sh’ma Journal, an independent Jewish print and online journal and blog, is currently seeking an Online Community Manager to manage and implement our ongoing online activities and expand both audience outreach and online engagement through the usage of new media and social media tools.

Ideal candidate will be a self-starter experienced with online social networking opportunities (with a primary focus on Facebook, Twitter, Google +, YouTube, and the blog world), stay up to date with online marketing and social media trends, and have an interest or background in Jewish thought, religion, culture, or history.

Knowledge and experience with WordPress, Hoot Suite, and Google Analytics is required. Knowledge and experience with digital video and photo editing software is preferred. Knowledge of Sh’ma and other Jewish newspapers and journals is also preferred.

Basic responsibilities include:

  • regularly prompting, monitoring, and updating all daily social media status posts and Sh’ma blog discussions and related correspondence
  • curating and scheduling the daily S Blog and handling all correspondence with bloggers including blog topic prompts, collecting submission deadlines, maintaining regular check-ins, and trouble shooting
  • scheduling and handling all monthly NiSh’ma video production correspondence with involved parties,  including technology walk-throughs, trouble shooting, editing and uploading of video content
  • seeking out monthly artists for online art exhibition and handling all correspondence, material submissions, and material upload to website via WordPress CMS
  • overseeing correspondence with digital edition team to create eblasts
  • overseeing regular maintenance and updates of website backend in concert with Online Editor and Webmasters
  • tracking key numbers on Google Analytics, Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ and delivering regular reports to Online Editor and Sh’ma staff
  • scouring the web for posts, keywords, and trending articles related to Sh’ma content and creating connections on social media and website
  • initiating conversations with current and prospective audience members on and related to our blog posts as well as our 43 year archive of articles
  • promoting the journal and its articles to online news sites and organizations (Jewish and secular)
  • expanding our overall online presence

Candidate will also interact with various online sources and organizations to help build online cross-promotional, marketing, and advertising efforts.

Candidate will work independently under the Online Editor and will be expected to use his/her own computer and mobile equipment. Given the nature of this position, schedules are somewhat flexible, but we are asking for a commitment of 15 hours a week. There will also be regular phone and in-person meetings with the Online Editor.
